On the 27th February 2010, an earthquake struck measuring 8.8 on the richter scale. It occured on a destructive plate margin where the Nazca plate moved under the South American plate which followed a series of aftershocks. It occured out at sea and were tsunamis and tsunami warnings were made to warn people on the coast.
Primary effects
- Around 500 people died, 12,000 injured and 800,000 people affected
- 220,000 homes, 4500 schools, 53 ports, 56 hospitals and other public buildings destroyed
- Port and Santiago airport badly damaged
- A lot of Chile lost power, water and communications
- Cost: $30 billion
Secondary effects
- 1500km of roads damaged caused by mainly landslides
- Several coastal towns and pacific countries devastated by tsunami waves
- A fire and chemical plant a Santiago - people had to be evacuated
Immediate effects
- Emergency services acted swiftly - had to help supply field hospitals, satellite phones and floating bridges
- Temporary road repairs
- Power and water restored in 90% of homes in 10 days
- Appeal to raise $60 million
