Muslim Attitudes to Abortion

Some Muslims also believe in the sanctity of life and abortion arguments. However, there are circumstances in which abortion is allowed.

  • Sanctity of life - a gift from God - abortion takes away a life so is wrong
  • Ensoulment - life begins when the soul has entered the foetus at 120 days, or 40 days for some Muslims

'Whosoever has killed a soul, it is as though he has murdered all of mankind.' - Qur'an 5:32

In some cases, abortion is allowed, for example if the mother's life was in danger. This is because:-

  • the foetus would not exist if it was not for the mother
  • the mother's life is established and she has responsibililties to carry out
