Romantic Song
- Romantic Songs are also known as lieder (love songs in German)
- They often contain German Poems
- Use Piano and Solo voice (Orchestra sometimes too)
- Melody and Accompaniment structure
- Usually about love
- Composers: Schubert, Schumann and Brahms
Pop Ballads
- Pop Ballads are often emotional and slow pop song
- Usually about love
- Ornamentation, Melismas, Rubato, Large range and Long held notes
- 4/4 time signature
- Verse - Chorus structure
- Piano, Strings, Guitar, Saxaphone
- Composers: Elton John, Mariah Carey, U2, Christina Aguilera, Kate Bush
Classical Concerto
- Work for the solo instrument (occasionally more than one) and an orchestra
- 3 movements (fast - slow - fast)
- Alternations between solo and tutti sections
- Cadenza: unaccompanied passage for the soloist
- Themes are exchanged between the orchestra and soloist
- Balanced and clear-cut phrases
- Homophonic texture
- Gradual Changes in dynamic
- Composers: Mozart and Haydn
Jazz
- Jazz originated in America
- Improvisation is used
- Syncopation and swung rhythms
- Walking Bass

- Instrumental break: Short solo at the end of a tutti passage
