Changes in Dharavi

Dharavi Re-development project

  • Part of Dharavi will be knocked down.
  • Modern high rise flats - each family will have a 21 m sqared apartment with water, sewage and electricity. However, only eligible if lived in Dharavi since before 2000.
  • Other residents will be rehoused elsewhere in the city.
  • Only industries that do not cause pollution will be able to relocate here.
  • Expensive apartments, office blocks, shopping malls, proper roads will replace it.

Drawbacks

  • Only some families will be rehoused in Dharavi.
  • Apartments are fixed size and small
  • Families used to live above workshops, so not possible anymore.
  • Many businesses will be banned for pollution.
  • Not enough space given to industries such as pottery and recycling.
