Lever Systems

~When the muscular and skeletal systems work togther, they create lever systems that help us to move.

There are 3 types of levers:

1st class                                    2nd class                                 3rd class

load-> fulcrum-> effort         fulcrum-> load-> effort         load-> effort-> fulcrum

(square)->(triangle)-> (arrow)(triangle)->(square)->(arrow)(square)->(arrow)->(triangle)

E.G. neck extension                E.G. plantar-flexion/dorsi-flexion        E.G. elbow flexion

(when heading a football)        (standing on your toes to jump)           (lifting a weight)

To remember these it goes 1,2,3,F,L,E (meaning the middle levers are Fulcrum,Load and Effort).

Planes and axes of movement

planes:

sagittal plane~ divides the body into left and right side.

transverse plane~ divides the body into top and bottom.

frontal plane~ divides the body's front and back.

axes:

sagittal axis~runs through the body from front to back.

frontal axis~ runs through the body from left to right.

vertical axis~ runs through the body from top to bottom.

To use flexion/extension you use the sagittal plane and frontal axis. An example of this is doing a forward roll. By doing adduction/abduction you use the frontal plane and the sagittal axis. An emample of this is doing a cartwheel. Doing a rotation you use the transverse plane and the vertical axis. An example of this is doing an ice skating spin.
