CSR refers to the ethical principles that a person/organisation should be accountable for and how its actions might affect the environment.

Company needs to cater to the needs of the customer but also consider the wider society.

Links to macro-marketing.

Ethical issues/ examples

  • Volvo sell 'Life saving reflective spray' for £120.
  • Kenco - Coffee vs. Gangs
  • Reputation Institute measures company’s CSR globally using various analytical techniques.
  • Google is rated 1. on the list but in 2013 avoided £1.6bn in tax.
  • VW emission scandal causes 60 death p.a in the US. More death in Europe. They attempted to hide the fraude and refused to pay compensation in the UK. However they ran a CSR focused ad campaign stating that they 'keep promises'.
  • Compaines use child labour, chemicals and dump waste to keep costs down, E.g H&M. Keep costs down = increase profits. People still buy from H&M.
  • Some customers/stockists now only value certain companies e.g. the body shop.
