Mitosis

Mitosis

  • Cell division
  • Produces cell that are - identical
have the same no. of chromosomes
  • Every cell carries an identical set of genes
  • Used in growth
  • Uses asexual reproduction
  • New cells are identical to parent cells
  • In a plant you see mitosis in the meristems (buds & roots)
  • In a human you see mitosis in growth
  • Cells can only divide 10 times & then die
  • Uncontrollable division = cancer

Meiosis

Meiosis

  • Make gametes (sex cells)
  • Each daughter cell has half the no. of chromosomes
  • Sperm & egg cells have 23 chromosomes each
  • In a plant the pollen & ovule have half the no. of chromosomes
  • In meiosis the daugher cell have half the no. of chromosomes because when the sperm fertilses the egg, the zygote will have the original no. of chromosome (in a human the zygote will have 46 chromosomes)

Comparing

Mitosis

  • Growth & repair
  • Asexual reproduction
  • Identical cells produced (2 cells produced)

Meiosis

  • Make gametes
  • Sexual reproduction
  • Half the no. of chromosomes (4 cells produced)
