-All building in Japan after 1981 were earthquake proof, this allowed Tokyo to survive the initial earthquake

-Tsunami walls protected the north east coast, however the earthquake caused the wall to fall by 1m. Walls were only able to withstand a 1m wave

-Japan gave tsunami warnings 10 initues after the earthquake but this did not give people time to move to higher ground
