Paid $4.50 - they could keep it no matter what

Told they were taking part in a study of "memory and learning"

Procedure

Yale University

Participants drew slips from a hat to be a learner. It was rigged. 2 Confederates (Other "partcipant" and "experimenter")

Electric shock panel: Looked authentic, 30 switches, 15V-450V, 15V gaps, labelled from "slight shock" to 3 X's

Partcipants given a sample shock: 45V. 

Learner often kicked the wall and shouted when shocked

Experimenter used 4 prods when the participant wanted to leave

Categorised into 2 groups:

1. Deviant: broke off before 450V

2. Obedient: completed the study/ went up to 450V

Predicted results

14 psychology students from Yale.

All predicted only a few would actually go through with the entire experiment

Actual Results

Nobody broke off before 300V ( 5 at 300V exactly)

26 went through the whole experiment 

14 showed nervous laughter and smiling

Others showed traits such as: sweating, trembling, stuttering, lip biting and groaning

3 had uncontrollable seizures
