  • Untill the 1980's emigration outweighed immigration
  • Mainly to USA, Australia, New Zealand & Canada
  • Mostly young adults
  • Economic Reasons
  • WWII = weak economy = encouraged to leave the country

  • First part of 20th century = Irish/eastern Europeans
  • 1950's = immigration from the Caribbean
  • 1960/70's = Indian sub-continent & Asians from East Africa
  • Last 20 years = Majority are European
  • Economic & political persecution
  • Employment
  • Immigration controls have limited movement from non-European countries

Outcomes

  • Immigration now outweighs emigration
  • Annual net migration = 200,000 per year
  • Mainly the result of the entry into the EC of many European states
