Formula for magnification

Magnification = image size ÷ real size

Image size = magnification x real size

Real size = image size ÷ magnification

Conversion from micrometres to millimetres = ÷1000

Resolution = The ability to distinguish between two points. Higher resolution = sharper image.

Microscopes

Light microscopes

- Uses light and lenses

- Can see individual cells and large sub cellular structures like nuclei

Electron microscopes

- Use electrons instead of light

- Higher magnification

- Higher resolution

- Smaller things in more detail like internal structures of mitochondria and chloroplasts. Can also see tiny things like ribosomes and plasmids
