Context

Steinbeck--> John Steinbeck was born in 1902 in Salinas, California

New york Wall street crash 1929 = US in ECONOMIC DEPRESSION

This led to harsh poverty, long-term unemployment and migrant workers came to California for work.

Men usually travelled alone. Travelled from ranch to ranch, short term and poorly paid.

George and Lennie personify the commonplace dream of a migrant worker, the dream to own their own piece of land and have a chance to settle down in the 'PROMISED LAND'=california.

The economic conditions of the time victimized workers like George and Lennie, whose quest for land was thwarted by cruel and powerful forces beyond their control, but whose tragedy was marked, ultimately, by steadfast compassion and love.
