Chapter 4

  • Lennie, Crooks and Candy share an optimistic moment and "the dream"
  • The lowest people in the story are full of hope and can see a way out
  • Curley's wife comes to cause trouble and she shows she superior to them
  • The men return - Normality returns
  • The scene ends with Crooks putting "liniment" on his back. The focus turns back to Pain and Work.

Chapter 5

  • Lennie kills his dog
  • Curley's wife spills her dreams and hopes and the harsh reality of what she has to live with
  • Lennie kills Curley's wife , he breaks her neck
  • Curley sends his men to kill Lennie
  • George tells lennie the story about "the dream" and shoots Lennie in the back of the head.

  • Lennie dies in a place of death and destiny
  • Destiny - where the aranged to meet, lennie saves teh life of a watersnake by disturbing a heron
  • Death -- A heron eats a watersnake, lennie has previously killed mice here, lennie dies here
  • He's killed like an animal unwanted
  • The characters react differently to his death

Carson doesnt care , Curley thinks he killed him like a pompous prat , George and Slim are thoughtful
