  Metals

  • Sonorous/ring when hit
  • Shiny surface
  • Malleable
  • Conduct electricity and heat

  • left of periodic table
  • three are magnetic:
  • can burn to form alkaline oxides
  • flexible

 Non-metals

  • Are not good conductors
  • Dull
  • Most are solids or gases
  • Right of periodic table
  • Are not magnetic
  • Can burn to form acidic oxides
  • brittle-easily broken/cracked

Alkali metals

  •   Lithium, Sodium, Potassium, Rubidium and Caesium
  • Most react with air and water and are stored in oil to keep out oxygen and moisture.
  • Most float and fizz in water. The bubbles contain Hydrogen. Potassium is so reactive that the heat it produces when it reacts sets the gas alight.
  • The alkali metals are in Group 1 and the metals' reactivities increase down the group
