Chemistry Revision February Test

?

Non Metals

Dull

Low melting point

Brittle

Bad conductors of heat abd electricity

1 of 8

Metals

Metals

Usuall shiny

High melting point usually

Sonorous

Dense usually

Good conductors of heat and electricity

Malleable

Ductile

2 of 8

Mixtures

The amount of ech substance may vary

The mixture has the same properties as the stuff inside it

It can be formed without any chemical reaction happening

They can be easily seperated

3 of 8

compounds

The amount of each element is fixed

Has different properties to the elements its made up of

A chemical reaction has to happen for the compound to be made

It is difficult to seperate

4 of 8

Mass

  • In a chemical reatcion no atoms are created or destroyed
  • The mass of a rection is always the same as the mass prior
  • The phlogiston theory is incorrect
  • The phlogiston theory is that phlogiston is released when something burns
5 of 8

Neutralisation

  • The mixture of acid and alkali reacting to each other
  • 1 to 6 is acid
  • 8 to 14 is alkali
  • 7 is neutral
  • Exothermic reaction
  • Gives off heat because there is more energy
  • Neutralisation gives off salt and water and carbon dioxide
6 of 8

Endothermic Reactions

Endothermic

  • Takes in heat
  • surroundings get colder
  • Energy needed to break old bonds are stronger than energy released making new bonds

Exothermic

  • Gives off heat
  • Surroundings get hotter
  • Energy released making new bonds is stronger than energy needed to break old bonds
7 of 8

Combustion

  • Three things are needed for a fire to start
  • Oxygen
  • Heat
  • Fuel

The evaporated fuel ignites

Hydrocarbons

  • If there is hydrogen and carbon in the fuel it will produce water and carbon dioxide when it burns
  • Fuel that has hydrogen and carbon are called hydrocarbonates
