Explain how the Menstrual Cycle works?

  • Day 1 menstruation starts, lasts around 4 days and FSH levels rise, causing eggs in ovaries to mature.
  • As FSH levels rise this stimulates the production of Oestrogen in ovaries. As Oestrogen levels rise, this inhibits the production of FSH(so only 1 egg is released in each cycle),so FSH levels fall. Oestrogen causes uterus lining to thicken + grow.Secretion of Oestrogen also stimulates production of LH from the Pituitary gland(master gland).
  • LH levels continue to rise and peak around day 14 when Ovulation occurs. After ovulation, Progesterone is secreted from the Ovaries, and their levels rise-inhibiting the production of LH & FSH.
  • Progestrone cause the uterus lining to be maintained, for a fertilised egg to be implanted into the uterus wall till around day 28.After that, progesterone levels fall as no fertilised egg has been implanted into the uterus wall-allows FSH to increase. And the cycle starts all over again.
