Memory throughout the Life Stages

Early - Middle Adulthood

  • Their thoughts are logical and work through realistic answers
  • The job roles they have will allow them to work through problems and make decisions to complex situations
  • Throughout this stage new brain cells will continue to be formed. However, during middle adulthood there may be a decline in processing speed.

Later Adulthood

  • It is assumed that memory loss is associated with the ageing process
  • However, the brain has capacity to continue making new cells throughout life
  • Just as exercise can protect muscular strength; lifestyle, health, activities etc. have an impact on brain, keeping it healthy and functioning
  • Age-related memory lapses may be frustrating but are not necessarily a sign of dementia
  • Psychological changes can cause temporary malfunction in brain function in ageing process
  • May also take longer to recall information, which is often mistaken for memory loss
