The king was the most important in medieval times, second only to the christian church. He made all of the decisions and ruled the country.
The nobles were the lords ad ladies of the land. They were the kings supporters and advisers.
The use of harsher punishments (specifically the death penalty) grew during this time which demonstrated the power of the king.
