Media Stereotype - simple media image based on prejudice

Social Construct - patterns of behaviour that are based on society's norms and expectations eg. masculinity and femininity

Norms and Expectations - generally accepted and expected patterns of behaviour in a particular society

Social Convention - a generally expected form of social behaviour eg. politeness

Stigmatise - to mark a particular social group or person as different, disapproved of or even dangerous to others

Deviancy Amplification - the process where the mass media can exaggerate the significance of a particular social issue

News Value - the importance attached to a particular news item

Moral Panic - when media coverage of an issue leads to exaggerated public concern
