CI13.8 - Condensation Reaction

- small stable molecule produced = HCL or H2O
- polyester = nylon
- amidie link = amine + carboxlyic acid
- acyl chloride used in labs = more reactive

CI13.8 - Amines

- Solubilty DECREASES with mass = more H bonds
- Benzene rings DECREASES basicity
- B.P INCREASES with mass

- Lewis Bases = lone pair donors
- Bronsted - Lowry Bases = proton acceptors

CI13.8 - Nylons

Naming Nylons:
- general formula - nylon - 6,6
- first number = num of C atoms in the amine
- second number = num of C atoms in the carboxylic acid

To make a chain = diamine + dicarboxlyic acid

CI13.8 - Hydrolysis

Hydrolysis = polymer + water
- Catalyst = acid / alkali = HCl / NaOH
- Conditions = reflux
- Acid = dicarboxylate salt + amine
- Alkali = promated diamine + carboxlyic acid

4 of 5

CI13.8 - Nucleophile

Conditions:
- sealed tube
- conc aqueous NH3
- heat

CH3-CH2-Br + NH3 = CH3-CH2-NH3+ + Br- = NH4Br + H2N-CH2-CH3

C-Br bond = polar
NH4Br = ammonium ion + Br-

Base strength INCREASES as lone pair is more avaliable
