Ion drift - the ions pass through a hole in the plate, forming a beam, and travel along the fight tube to a detector.
Detection - when ions with the same charge arrive at the detector, the lighter ones are first due to higher velocity. The flight times are recorded. Positively charged ions pick up an electron from the detector, causing a current to flow.
Data analysis - the signal from a detector is passed to a computer, which produces mass spectrum diagram.
