similarities:

  • both structural theories
  • both view society as more powerful than individuals
  • both seen individual powerless(symbolic interactionists see people as active choosing agents in charge of own destinies)

differences:

  • functionalists : say society functions for good of evreyone and marxists say society functions for ruling class benefit
  • functionalists say society characterised by high levels of consensus and Marxists argue society full of conflict
  • both see socialisation as a key to passing on norms and values.functionalists see this as good because it maintains social order but Marxists see this as bad because ideology is still transmitted through institutions and leads to BRAIN WASHING
