Truman believed poverty would cause people to look towards communism for help, so he wanted to make Europe prosperous again.
It was important fo the US to future trading partners but Europe's economies were still weak.
US secretary of state George Marshall visisted Europe and came up with a European reocvery plan. Its aims were:
To stop the spread of Communism
To help the econmies of Europe to recover
Extension of the Truman Doctrine
16 Countries accepted it
Stalin refused it for the USSR and banned eastern european countries from accepting it - he believed the US was trying to buy allies and it would weaken his control of the US
Over the next 4 years 13,000million dollars of Marshall aid flowed into westren Europe.
