  • Divorce is allowed if desertion, adultery or unreasonable behaviour occurs
  • Roman Catholic church say marriage is a sacrement and breaks the promise made with God, divorce is not allowed, only God can seperate people
  • Protestant church say marriage is a covenant (can be broken) because Jesus allowed divorce for adultery  recognised divorce would happen because of the hardness of peoples hearts

MUSLIM ATTITUDES TO DIVORCE

  • Divorce is allowed if desertion, adultery or unreasonable behaviour occurs
  • marriage is a contract :

1.The husband must announce his intention to divorce his wife 3 x over 3 month

2.During this time the couple get together

3.The couple and families try to work things out

4.After three months, the couple are free to remarry

  • most muslims accept divorce as a last resort
  • some muslims dont because the prophet never divorced and said it was hated

The family is very important in Islam. All are called to marry and have children.

Family values =

Family is where religious activities take place Mother and father have responsibility to raise their child as a Muslim Children are taught values Worldwide Muslim family – Ummah Family life is the first level of community in Islam Healthy environment for children.

Roman Catholic church =

  • it is wrong.
  • You can be homosexual, just do not act on it.
  • Bible teaches it is wrong, it undermines the family unit.

Evangelical Christians =

  • it is wrong,
  • you can be prayed for to restore your heterosexuality

Liberal Protestants =

  • it is natural,
  • all are equal,
  • some churches bless civil partnerships, Jesus taught ‘love your neighbour'

MUSLIM ATTITUDES TO HOMOSEXUALITY

  • Forbidden in the Qur’an

Punishable by death according to the Shari’ah Homosexual relationships cannot produce children It threatens the stability of society It is harmful to the health of individuals

Alternative views:

  • Some Muslims will support homosexuals so that they are not excluded from the community
  • Some accept the scientific evidence that homosexuality is not a choice.

Some Christians (Roman Catholic) believe that every homosexual act should be open to the possibility of having a child, sex is for unity and procreation

Other Christians using contraception is not a sin, it helps family planning and sex is not just for procreation

1 = it is wrong, withdrawal method is acceptable as Muhammad (pbuh) used this and other natural methods, permanent methods are forbidden, having children is important

2 = allowed to preserve the life of the mother, some believe all forms of contraception are acceptable,
