Market Rasen earthquake, Linciolnshire 2008

Caused:

By a sudden rupture along strike-slip fault, 12 miles beneath Linciolnshire. It was a maximum vertical ground motion that caused 9 aftershocks in a north- south direction. There was horizontal movement detected along the 2 mile fault rupture.

Impacts: people

  • no deaths
  • David Bates - broken pelvis when a chimney fell on him
  • noticable vibration as far out as Hampshire
  • woke people in Bangor, N.Ireland

Impacts: property

  • Structual damage affected many homes - £30 million
  • chimneys collapse at East Barkwith post office
  • Apartment blocks said to have shaken for 30 seconds
  • Powercuts
