Making Salts

?

Making Insoluble Salts

  • Find two solutions with the required ions
    • They must be aqueous, so make sure that both substances are soluble
  • Perform a precipitation reaction
  • Filter the precipitate from the solution, wash it, and then dry it on filter paper

Making Soluble Salts (Method 1)

This method is used with a metal or insoluble base

  • Pick a suitable acid, plus a suitable metal, metal oxide, or metal hydroxide
    • e.g. hydrochloric acid and copper oxide to make copper chloride
  • React the two - you can tell when the reaction is finished as the solid will stop reating
  • Filter out excess solid to get the salt solution
  • Evaporate some of the water and then leave the rest to evaporate slowly - this is called crystallisation

Making Soluble Salts (Method 2)

This method is used with soluble bases

  • Perform a titration to add exactly the right amount of alkali to neutralise the acid
  • Evaporate the water and leave to crystallise
