In a desolate place blasted by thunderstorms, Three Witches meet to predict the future.

Thunder and lighting crash above a scottish moor. three witches appear out of the storm and begin chanting. they make plans to meet again upon the heath after the battle to confront macbeth and then they dissapear.

why is act 1 scene 1 important? (and key meanings)

The witches speak in rhyme because it shows that they are more magical than everyone else and it signifies that they are different. the play starts with witches to show there status as characters and their importance and it sets up the mood for the rest of the play.

hurly burly- noise of the battle

ere- before

paddock- name of the toad

upon the heath- open field

anon- ill be there

Quote 1

Quote - ' fair is foul and foul is fair'    

Method - antithesis

Effect-  dual effect- contradictory statements are expected riddles from witches. on the other hand, the line suggests a paradox that runs throughout the play that - life may present a confused picture of events in which discerning falseoood from truth is difficult.

Quote - 'thunder lighting rain fog and filthy air'

Method - imagery of witchcraft and chaotic weather 

Effect-  creates sense of darkness which links to darkness of jacobean time .
