Chapter 1

  • Boys arrive on island.
  • Ralph and Piggy first meet- Ralph dismisses Piggy as they are completely opposite.
  • They explore the island & discover the conch.
  • Other boys appear, the choir boys, Jack Merridew is the head of the choir.
  • Realise they are alone on the island, will look after themselves, excited.
  • All introduced to eachother and debate who will be chief, between Jack and Ralph.
  • Conch is already significant during meetings.
  • They walked the island to discover more- everyone is naive.

Chapter 2

  • They realise no one is living on the island. Jacl wants an army to hunt, Ralph is concerned about practicality eg: smoke tracks for rescue. 
  • Boys realise they could be here a while- little ones are scared but plan for it to be fun.
  • Little ones claimed to see a beast.
  • Start a fire with Piggy's glasses, Jack was supposed to guard- he doesn't listen to ralph.
  • All the wood they collected had burnt and killed a little one, because Jack didn't guard.

Chapter 3

  • Jack gets rid of his school uniform, loses sense of civilisation and youth.
  • Wears shorts with a knife belt- represents his animalistic ways developing, adapting to nature.
  • Ralph tries to be responsible by building shelter, only Simon helps.
  • Jack is obsessed with hunting pigs,
  • They all are beginning to feel as though they are not responsible for their behaviour.

Chapter 4

  • Everyone became used to falling ill- their unhygienic lifestyle and lack of responsibility didn't help.
  • Rodger and Morris destroy the children's sandcastles- turning evil
  • Jack painted his face, camouflaging his old self and dehumanises as he knows he can live however he likes.
  • Piggy & Ralph run up the mountain, see the ship and that the fire had ran out- Jack's fault.
  • Jack kills a pig and becomes savage.
  • Violence is evident, Jack snaps Piggy's glasses

Chapter 5

  • There are rumours of a beast- a meeting is held regarding this.
  • Jack doesn't believe the beast.
  • Piggy questions morals- trying to put a stop to the savagery,
  • Further on, Jack uses the beast to put fear into the others- ironic as he doesn't believe it here.
  • Everyone argues, democracy is breaking away.

Chapter 6

  • Explosion in the sky- parachutist falls.
  • Twins think it's a beast, wakes up Ralph.
  • Jack wants to find the beast, Ralph wants to concentrate on the fire.
  • Parachutist represents the war in the wider world.

Chapter 7

  • Jack discovers tracks of a boar, but thinks it is the beast.
  • Creates a dance/ chant saying that they will kill the beast.
  • Dead parachutist is discovered.
  • Hunting descending into savagery.

Chapter 8

  • Ralph and Jack argue over becoming chief.
  • Jack leaves after arguing, most of the boys follow him.
  • Jack and the hunters go to kill the pig.
  • Head of the pig is placed on the stick- ultimate act of evil.
  • Simon talks to the pig

Chapter 9

  • Simon sees the dead parachutist.
  • Jack encourages them to do the dance.
  • Simon gets caught in the dance, they think Simon is the beast and they kill him.

Chapter 10

  • Little ones find Ralph and Piggy for reassurance after realising they have killed Simon.
  • Ralph realises they have killed Simon, Piggy tries to blame it on the weather and on Simon.
  • Piggy and Ralph go to Castle Rock to find Jack.
  • While everyone is asleep, Jack and the hunters attack Piggy and Ralph.
  • Piggy's glasses get broken.

Chapter 11

  • Can't set the fire without the glasses.
  • Conch group confronts the savages.
  • Rodger kills Piggy by catapulting a heay rock.
  • All sense of civilisation is lost when Piggy dies.
  • Piggy dies and conch destroyed at the same time.
  • Same and Eric are captured by savages.
  • Ralph is alone.
  • Fears they will kill Ralph.

Chapter 12

  • Ralph leaves Castle Rock.
  • Sam and Eric join the savage tribe, Ralph speaks to them and they have been tortured.
  • They try to smoke Ralph out.
  • Ralph runs out of the island and runs away - found the naval commander.
  • Children cry, resort back to their old ways.
