Chapter 2 quotes - fire on the mountain

"All 3 of them tried to convey the sense of the pink live thing strugging in the creepers" - The boys still can't understand svagery and violence yet - they haven't forgotten society yet.

"Jack was on is feet. 'We'll have rules,' he cried excitedly. Lots of rules! Then anyone breaks 'em-" - Jack is excited the thought of rules but only so he has an excuse to hurt someone - notcice how he escalates from needing an excuse to hurt someone and at the end torturing a boy for no reason.

"It's like in a book...'Coral Island' - the boys are relating their situation to Coral Island - however that is an entirely different story.

"'He says he saw the beastie, the snake thin, and will it come back tonight?'-'But there isn't a snake thing!" - Denying the thought of a beast for fear.

"'There isn't a snake thing. But if there was we'd hunt and kill it'" - Ralph is trying to reassure everyone of the beast threat - a good leader.

"Acting like a crowd of kids! - with a martyred expression of a parent who has to keep up with the senseless ebullience of children, he picked up the conch" - Piggy is referred to as a parent

"The shameful knowledge grew in them" - knowledge is a key theme throughout the book and right now it's saying that they are beginning to understand more about violence and cruelty

"The conch doesn't count on top of the moutain"  - Jack is already challenging Ralph as leader

"The unfriendly side of the mountain" - The boys think of it as 'unfriendly' because they burnt it down 

"Feeling the beginnings of awe at the power set free below them" - power is also a key theme in this book and we see it start escalating here

"'That littl'un had a mark his - face. - Where is - he now?'" - the mulberry mark dissapears in the confusion of the fire and the talking about the beast
