Chapter 10 quotes - the shell and the glasses

This chapter is split into 3 parts - Ralph, Piggy and Samneric after the 'dance' - Jack's tribe after the dance - Jack and tribe decide to steal Piggy's glasses

Ralph, Piggy and Samneric after the 'dance' 

  • "'that was Simon' ... 'Piggy' 'Uh?''That was murder'" - Ralph is admitting what he did
  • "There was thunder and lightning and rain. We was scared!" - Piggy is trying to persuade Ralph and himself that it wasn't their fault
  • "Searching for a formula" - Piggy is a scientific thinker and using formulas - Science and Piggy cannot explain a way to get our of the fact that it was murder
  • "'He was batty. He asked for it'" - Piggy cannot bare to live with the fact that he killed someone and comes up with any excuse to get out of it
  • "'So did we - very early - we were very tired'" - Even Samneric lied about that they were there

"the air was heavy with unspoken knowlodge" - This shows that they all knew they had done it but weren't telling the others they knew. Remember knowledge is a key theme

Jack is no longer Jack he's only called "chief" 

"The beast might try to come in" - Jack is telling the boys the beast is still real because it's his only leverage for keeping them as his - by offering them protection from the beast

"The chief's blush was hidden by the white and red clay" - Jack is embarrassed when he realises they have no fire but no one can see that through the paint

The glasses come to symbolise power - for making fire for being saved or cooking

"From his left dangled Piggy's broken glasses" - Jack has stolen Piggy glasses to use for cooking

Key term - Foreshadowing - when the author gives us a sense of somehting that will happen later, e.g. Roger throws stones and then later on throws boulders
