lord of the flies chapter one

At the start of the book the children on the island are normal, they have just crash landed and have a normal conversation for example when Piggy is introduced to another character he asks "what's your name?"                                                                                                                                      He replies with "Ralph"

golding writes "began to pick his way toward the lagoon" suggesting the beach is like a heaven, representing the garden of eden.

Later on within the chapter they decide to have a chief and vote for a worthy candidate,Ralph ended up being chief becuase he blew the conch by saying "let him be cheif with the trumpet-thing." The conch represents civilisation.

lord of the flies chapter two

the second chapter is called "fire on the mountain"                                                                        Jack bring up the need for hunters by saying "all the same you need an army-for hunting. Hunting pigs-."

The paragraph consists of the hunters explaining how they saw a pig that got away and Jack says "before i could kill it-but-next time!" the use of exclamation mark suggests that he is raising his voice.                                                                                                                                              The reader can also infer that Jack is getting irritated that he didnt get the pig when it says "Jack slammed his knife into a trunk and looked around challengingly." this is not a sign of savageness but an idea that he enjoys hunting. As Ralph being leader he wants to ensure everyone is heard he comes up with a way so everyone has a chnace to talk during meetings so he says "ill give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he is speaking."

In attempt to be rescued they set a fire so the smoke is seen by ships or anysort of  human going past, this is suggested by Ralph and he says "we must make a fire."

the island set on fire by mistake and the littlelun with the birthmark died. the island stting on fire represents hell.

lord of the flies chapter three

In "huts on the beach" the beggining is "Jack was bent double. He was bent down like a hunter."

Already, Jack is inheriting animal like qualities to help him understand a way to survive on the island."Then dog-like...on all fours."                                                                                              Again Jack attempts to kill a pig but didnt and yells "But i shall! next time! i got to get a barb on this spear!" Jack constantly shouting about not yet killing the pig shows his passion for hunting getting stronger.

Ralpg gets mad at Jack ans says 'dont you want to be recued? All you can think about is pig, pig, pig!" which is the first we see of any sort of tension between the characters and the begining of an invisible hatred between the two.

lord of the flies chapter four

painted faces and long hair is significant becuase it presenting that they have been on the island for so long that the boys now have long hair.

Roger is throwinf stones at a littlun however miising on purpose suggesting the nned to hurt a someone is there but authority is still there, humanity is still inside them. We know this when is says "he dare not throw them...round the sqauting child was the protection of parents and school and policmen and the law."

Ralph see's a ship and is so relieved however there was no signal fire Ralph was very angry and said "they let the bloody fire out." also in the paragraph it states "Ralp clenched his his fist and went very red." the hunters came back with a dead pig "the pifs head hund down with a gaping neck." indicating they killed it very gruesomely and they began to chant "kill the pig. Cut her throat. Spill her blood." suggesting they may be going feral at this point nearly ha;f way on their journey to full savageness.

Ralph shouts and says "there was a ship. You said you'd keep the fire going and you let it out!" he keeps repeating "there was a ship" as is he was almost in disbelief of what just happened.

Piggy stands up for Ralph and says "you said you would keep the smoke going-" Jack was humiliated after being so proud of finally killing the pig "stuck his fist into piggy's stomach." and he yells "you would, would you? fatty!" when Jack got angry he became violent and insulted Piggy adding to his primitive behavior.

lord of the flies chapter five

beast from the water is yet another chapter exampling how the children are slowly becomeing savage. Ralph holds a meeting still holding power and says "we decide things. But they dont get done."he also brings up the fear he knows that the littluns have about the "beastie" and leactures "theres nothing in it...only thats nonsense! Like bogies." trying to stop the fear without being harsh talking informally realte to them and connect. However Jack takes the conch and says " Beasts!... you're alot of cry-babies and sissies."insulting the littluns and having no sympathy. The islan is having a worse negative impact on him then the rest of the children.

later on in the chapter the littluns think they saw a beast and Jack yells "beast my foot!"

after a long argument on wether ther is a best or not piggy says "what are we humans or savages?" but Jack cant handle it and shouts again " you shutup, you fat slug!"
