Loop Of Henle

  • Creates a salt concentration gradient in medulla
  • Descends into the medulla, ascends into cortex
  • Isotonic filtrate at the beginning
    • First part is short and fat
      • Impermeable to water and salts
  • Hypertonic in the middle

Descending limb

  •
    • Thin descending limb is permeable to water
    • Not permeable to sodium and chloride ions

Ascending Limb

  • Ion channels allow Sodium and Chloride out by fascilitated diffusion
  • Thick part at the end has many mitochondria
    •
      • Actively transports Sodium and Chlorine into Medulla
  • Hypotonic at the end
