First response (startle response) is immediate and operates within 30 seconds of a threat.SAM is used for ACUTE / immmediate stress. Fight/flight. Uses the nervous system/Electrical, so effects are quick. Immediate/acute stressors arouse the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Specifically the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) this controls our internal organs and glands, heart, digestive and circulatory system. The SNS prepares an animal for the fight or flight response. Sympathomedullary Pathway/Sympathetic Adrenal Medullary (SAM) Pathway -  Acute Stress Higher Brain centres (cortex etc) Hypothalamus (activates) Sympathetic NS part of ANS involved in arousing the body (sends neurotransmitters to) Adrenal Medulla (Stimulates release of) Release of Adrenaline/noradrenaline   Acronym - AHHSAR -  And Hyper Hawaiian Ants Sometimes Attack Rabbits
