Topic 1 Concepts of Health and Well-being

HEALTH-

  • Health is a positive concept to which suggests well-being as opposed to disease or illness
  • There is more than one dimension to health- physical, social, emotional, mental.

ILL-HEALTH-

  • A state in which an individual is unable to function normally and without pain.
  • May be regarded as the opposite of health.
  • It can be physical or mental

DISEASE-

  • Disease is a condition which can affect functioning of the body physically and mentally.
  • EXAMPLE- coronary heart disease, Alzheimers disease.
  • Disease is long term and can result from injuries, accidents or infections.

STRESS RELATED ILLNESS-

  • Stress related illness refers to a set of symptoms which has come about as a direct result of exposure to short term or long term stressors.
  • Symptoms of stress related illness may include - headaches, stomach problems, anxiety

MENTAL HEALTH-

  • Mental health is a positive concept which suggests wellbeing as opposed to illness.
  • It involves an individuals sense of being able to cope, being in control of his/her life

MENTAL ILLNESS-

  • Mental illness is the term used to describe behaviour which is generally regarded as abnormal and inexplicable within the expected patterns of behaviour.
  • EXAMPLES- depressions, obsessions, dementia
  • Many types of mental illness are treatable.
