Houses

The houses were close together and claustrophobic to save space.

The rooms were normally very small, often with more than one family to a room.

Some houses only had one room which served as a living room, kitchen, dining room and bedroom.

Homes and Beds

Out of 3000 homes:

  • In 773 homes there were 3/4 to a bed
  • In 209 homes there was 4/5 to a bed
  • In 15 homes there was 6/7 to a bed

Some people slept on straw, on the floor or with no blanket.

Cellars

Poorer people would live in cellars.

This was dark and cramped as there was normally at least 2/3 familes in each small cellar.

The cellars were very dirty, and rats came in which caused disease.

Toilets

Toilets were known as 'privies.' 

These were dirty and smelly,

There was often one privy to a street which was emptied sometimes 2/3 times a year.

Some people had chamber pots for the night-time.

Water and Cholera

Sewage was emptied into the stream, as was dead animals. 

The water from the stream was then dirty.

The water was used for drinking, cooking and washing.

The dirty water caused cholera.

Sewage

There were big dungheaps in the street and sewage running down the gutter.

The streets smelt bad and was unhygienic.
