Saturated or Unsaturated

Saturated lipids-

  • mainly found in animal fats
  • have single bonds (alkanes)
  • higher melting points

Unsaturated lipids-

  • Mainly found in plant fats
  • Have double bonds (alkenes)
  • Lower melting points

  • Glycerol + 3 fatty acid =>Trglyceride and 3 H2O
  • Formed by condensation reaction
  • Ester bonds
  • Insoluble in water- not affected by Osmotic pressure
  • High ratio of storing carbon-hydrogen bonds to carbon atoms- Excellent source of energy

  • Hydrophobic tail
