What conditions did the poor live in?

-poor housing -low wages -unemployment -little help for sick or elderly

ATTITUDES BEFORE THE REFORMS

-POVERTY was blamed on poor people for being lazy  -people believe everyoe was responsible for their own walfare -people could only get help by going to a workhouse where conditions were on purposely bad so people wouldnt get help. they only had help from charities

WHAT DID THE SOCIAL REFORMERS FIND OUT

CHARLES BOOTH- found out about poverty in london and published findings

ROWNTREE- found out about poverty in york and published his findings

-the both found out around 32% of people lived below poverty line

THE BOER WAR

-realised people werent fit enough for war, as had not grown due to malnutrition, this worried the goverment so they introduced reforms due to wanting a stronger army

-both believed people would be so much better off with help

CHILDREN

free school meals 1906-150000 children recieved one decent freeschool meal, however schools did not have to provide them

SCHOOL MEDICAL INSPECTION 1907- children got free compulsary medical checks, however medicine was only advised, they didnt give itto the chiuldren for free

SCHOOL CLINICS 1912 provided free medicine

CHILDREN and young persons act-children became protected persons, parents were put into jail if abused their children

OLD PENSIONS ACT 1908-all people aged over 70 got 5s a week andcouples got 7s could be refused to people if hadnt worked to the best of their ability

1909 labour exchanges-unemployed workers could go to goverment labour exchange to find out what jobs were avalible andt this scheme gave 3000 jobs a dAY for workers. The only issue was the jobs were short term and casual

NATIONAL INSURANCE ACT PART 1  IF a worker was unemployed get 7s6d per week it was funded by worker, employer and goverment contributions however this wasnt enough to live off

IF a worker was unwell they would recieve 10s a week for 13 weeks
