Powers of the league

the league had set stages on how to solve problems:

the 1st one was NEGOTIATION

this is were to countries would talk about the problem and comprimise a solution

Failed because: the country could just ingnore what the league was saying

The 2nd one was: MORAL PRESSURE

this was were the league 'told' the country off and it was seen as a warning. It tried to make the country feel guilty

Failed because: they could simply ignore what the league was saying

The 3rd one was: ECONOMIC SANCTIONS

this is where the league tried to put pressure on the guilty country but asking all countries in the league to stop tading with them

Failed because: none of the countries stopped trading because the loss of trade would effect there own country itself.

The 4 th one was: MILITARY FORCE

This is where the league would ask the countries to make their armies against the guilty country.

Failed because: league had no army of its own, therefore only work if league members were willing to use their own armies

Manchurian crisis

This crises is one of the 2 that marks failure of the league. 1931

Crisis was between china and japan.Japan owned the south Manchurian railway

Japan claimed that china had bombed the rail way as excuse they then went and invaded china Japan defeated china and they set up a government in Manchuria.

Japan did this so it could demonstrate the strengths of its army  and also felt annoyed by the way britain and france had shown disrespect at the paris peace conference. They also thought it would be easy to conquer as china was weak and already had an army stationed in china, Manchuria.

What china did? china went to the league for help. League said japan should withdraw its troops from Manchuria, they ignored this.League set up lytton commission- took whole year to produce report, and it only condemned japans  behavior and told the to leave Manchuria. So japan ignored the report, left the league and conquered china again.

Manchurian crisis 2

The league didn't take action against japan because there main trade was the USA. The USA was not in the league. Wall street crash was goin gon so the countires wanted to maintain trade with japan.

Also nearest country to japan which could of used arm forces against japan was the USSR, they were not in the league.

Important because:

shows failure of the league as the failed to stop japan, the league was then undermined. Other major powerd such as germany and italy was encouraged by the strength of the league.

Authority of league damaged because one of the 4 permanent members left (japan) and other countries were not prepared to stand up for what was right, had there own countries interests at risk.
