Gladiators were either slaves, criminals, prisoners or free volunteers
- The gladiator fight was held in an amphitheatre
- The amphitheatre in Pompeii was large enough to contain the while population and more
- After the spectators take their place, a trumpet blares, a preist comes to peform a religious ceremony and the game begins
- The fight ended in a surrender of one of the gladiators or the death of one
- Spectators could indicate their wishes by eith putting there them up to say 'kill him' or thumbs down to say ket him live.
- The most successful and popular gladiator recieved gifts of money from their admirers
- If the gladiator lived long enough and showed great skill and courage, then he would be awarded with a wooden sword. This was a high honour saying that he would never have to fight again
- Some men fought wild beasts that were released from their cages into the arena. These men were called beast-fighters that only had a spear and light clothing so their agility would have to would save them from injury. By the end a few humans and beasts would have been killed so they would be disposed of.
