  • plays were performed at festivals
  • no buisness was done in the forum all shops were closed
  • town councillors and important citizens had the best seats at the front of the auditorium
  • the large theatre in Pompeii could seat 5000
  • all expenses of the play were done by a wealthy citizen to gain popularity

Slaves

Slaves

  • people usually became slaves if they were prisoner of war, captured by pirates and if your parents were slaves you were automatically classified as a slave
  • very wealthy men had hundreds and sometimes thousands of slaves
  • slaves were not allowed to get married
  • they could not own personal items
  • they could have jobs like being a cook, gardener, musicians or general servants
  • slaves came from gaul and britain, spain and north africa, egypt different part of greece, asia, syria and palestine
  • some masters were brutal and cruel but some were knid and gentle
  • when a slave's head was touched with a rod he was declared free
  • a freed slave could make his own way of life, but he could not stand in the election or be a high-ranked officier
  • some could set up their own buisnesses
  • a freed women slave would usually marry her former master

Beliefs after death

  • A speech is said about the good deeds of the dead person
  • A last kiss is given
  • The person's best dress and jewellery are burned with them
  • A wreath is laid on the dead person's head
  • The tombs of the dead person are kept on the side of the road for passing people to see
  • People pour fine for the dead to drink
  • The entire family of the person that died go to their funeral
  • The funeral is held a few days after he/she dies

Gladiators

Gladiators were either slaves, criminals, prisoners or free volunteers

  • The gladiator fight was held in an amphitheatre
  • The amphitheatre in Pompeii was large enough to contain the while population and more
  • After the spectators take their place, a trumpet blares, a preist comes to peform a religious ceremony and the game begins
  • The fight ended in a surrender of one of the gladiators or the death of one
  • Spectators could indicate their wishes by eith putting there them up to say 'kill him' or thumbs down to say ket him live.
  • The most successful and popular gladiator recieved gifts of money from their admirers
  • If the gladiator lived long enough and showed great skill and courage, then he would be awarded with a wooden sword. This was a high honour saying that he would never have to fight again
  • Some men fought wild beasts that were released from their cages into the arena. These men were called beast-fighters that only had a spear and light clothing so their agility would have to would save them from injury. By the end a few humans and beasts would have been killed so they would be disposed of.
