Question one

For question one, you will have to find four facts.

  • The four facts should always be explicit.
  • The facts must come from the specific lines of the extract you've been asked to focus on.
  • You just have to list the facts, there is no need to write anything else about them.
  • The topic of the text will determine what the facts have to be about.
  • You will get one mark for each fact.
  • This question is worth 4 marks
  • You should spend 5 minutes on this.

Question two

For question two you will be looking at the effects of language on a reader.

  • You need to write about how the writer uses language to influence the reader.
  • You should be writing about the methods the writer has used and their effects on the reader, in this case - language devices.
  • The effect you're asked to talk about will depend on the individual text.
  • Only analyse the specific lines stated.
  • Answer all of the bullet points. These will usually be words and phrases, language features and techniques and sentence forms.
  • You must use subject terminology.
  • Always quote
  • This question is worth 8 marks.
  • You should spend about 10 minutes on this.
  • Aim to write 3-4 PEE paragraphs

Question three

For question three you will need to talk about the writer's use of structure.

  • You will need to write about how the writer uses structure to achieve effects and influence the reader.
  • You need to write about the structural techniques the writer has used to produce the desired effect on the reader.
  • Include everything mentioned in the bullet points.
  • Use subject terminology.
  • You must quote.
  • You need to look at the structure of the whole text.
  • The effect you're asked about will change dependent on the text.
  • This question is worth 8 marks.
  • You should spend about 10 minutes on this question.
  • You need to write about 3-4 PEE paragraphs.

Question four

For question four you will need to give personal judgement on a statement.

  • In this question, you will need to evaluate the text critically and give a personal response.
  • Only analyse the specific lines stated in the question.
  • The statement will be related to the individual text.
  • The statement usually focuses on the writer's techniques and their effect on the reader.
  • You need to write about your own opinion of the text.
  • Answer all of the bullet points.
  • You need to back up your argument with lots of evidence. Quote!
  • Overall you should support the statement, but it is good to have a balanced argument.
  • This question is worth 20 marks.
  • You should spend about 30 minutes on this.
  • Aim to write 5 PEE paragraphs, including a conclusion.

Question five

In question five you will need to choose one of the creative tasks based on a stimuli picture. This will be a description or the opening to a story. 

  • You need to create a plan before doing this piece.
  • This will expect you to produce an interesting, well-organised and accurately written piece.
  • The tasks will be a similar theme to the text from the reading section. 
  • The question will give you a specific audience, form and purpose. Your writing should recognise this.
  • Only do one task.
  • Make your writing as engaging as possible. Use language techniques and a range of vocabulary.
  • It needs to be very descriptive.
  • This question is worth 40 marks. 24 for content and organisation, and 16 for technical accuracy.
  • You should spend 45-50 minutes on this question.
  • Aim to write 5 lengthy paragraphs
