Look at the style of the text:

First examination of the text you might notice: 

  • words, letters &  punctuation
  • the appearance of the text

Take a step back you may notice:

  • whole sentence structure

A panoramic view would show:

  • the shape of the whole text
  • the way it begins and ends

Key Levels & Frameworks

Levels = a structure starting with the **smallest elements and build up into a ***larger structure.

   **Phonology - the sounds of language

     Graphology - visual marks on the page

     Lexis - Choice of words

     Morphology - word structure

MFFA

Mode (text type): What is it?

  • the method of communication - spoken, written, multimodal
  • text type or genre - advertisement, journalism etc.

Field (topic): What is it about?

  • may include use of specialist or non - specialist language 
  • Occupations, professions, areas of Interest have own spcia;ised vocabulary (jargon)  

Function: Why was it produced?

  • purpose of text - depending on function; social lang; to inform or persuade

Audience: Who produced it and for Whom?

  • The intended recipients
  • relationship between speaker/hearer or writer/reader - addresser & addressee
