- The mirror phase - we get a sense of being mirrored by ourselves

- The imaginary = The Ego - False Image

- The realm of law structure, language, culture and inheritance

- To be human is to enter language - we don't have a choice

- We enter into language which leads into the signifier

- Signifier enters us into a structure and a system of language, culture etc

- Not reality

- Our sense of reality is composed out of images and signifiers

- Links to Juissance - beyond our normal concept of reality

- We use reality to escape the real

- Everyday instructive can be ways to avoid the real

- It is a traumatic emergence of something that disrupts our sense of reality

- For Lacan psychoanalysis provides us with a way to deal with the real
