4 stages

PREPATORY STAGE (18months 6 years)

  • Children develop motor skills needed to write
  • Learn basics of the spelling system

CONCOLIDATION STAGE (6-8)

  • Write in the same way as you speak (colloqual)
  • Use lots of colloqualisms, familiar conncectives and short declarative statements

DIFFERENTIATION STAGE (8 - midteens)

  • Aware of differences between conventions of spoken and written language
  • Begin to structure work using guides and framworks
  • Understand there's different genres and purposes
  • Punctuation, grammar and sentences become more complex, accurate and consistenct

INTEGRATION STAGE (mid teens +)

  • Linguistic choices made accuratwely and consistently
  • Develop personal voice when writing
  • Understand style can change according to audience and purpose
