·       Hanshin Expressway collapsed
·       Buildings, bridges and roads collapsed
·       Newer building designed for earthquakes survived, but older ones collapsed

·       300,000 homeless
·       Fires throughout city due to gas leaks
·       Not enough clean water until April 1995
·       Water used for fires came from the sea and sewage systems
·       £100 billion damage
