KGB, Where and What

KGB - Komitet gosudarstvennoy bezopasnosti 

Where - KGB was based in Moscow 

What - A Soviet Union foriegn intlligence and domestic security agency  This organization was originally designed to be a state security committee and was attached to the Council of Ministers.

Examples

 Guy Burgess and Donald Maclean  - passsed documents over to the soivet Union 

John Vassal-  Naval attaché at the British Embassy in Moscow jailed(18years) for spying for USSR 

 Anthony Blunt - In charge of queens art collection, recived knighthood but working for soviets 

1961, 3 men and 2 women jailed – Gordon Lonsdale, Peter Kroger, Helen Kroger, Henry Houghton and Ethel Gee.  Found guilty of treason - Plotting to hand over to USSR information about British Nuclear Submarine.

1961, George Blake (42-yr) prison sentence - spying for the Soviet Union.
Double agent (9 yrs) 
1966, Blake escaped from prison.

Stasi

Stasi - Staatssicherheit 

what - Ministry of State Security had two jobs

 Worked as a secret service and a secret police. 

where it operated... 

It was located in the Lichtenberg locality of Berlin, (East Germany) with several smaller complexs throuhgout the city. 

When  February 8, 1950 - March 31, 1990

Examples of people involved with the KGB...  Everyone from schoolchildren upwards, the informants where not just made up of official Stasi Personell. Informing network larger than expected.
