Key sociology terms

Sociology is the study of society and human behaviour.

There are many basic terms in sociology you need to know.

1. Seeing the general in the particular - identifying general patterns in behaviour

2. Seeing the strange in the familiar - Looking at things that are normal through a new lens

Social location is like a location on a map. It includes;

• Race and religion
• Class
• Sexuality

Social location can limit your choices in life e.g. gay marriage

If a social group is marginalized it means that it occupies a position outside the centres of power.

Power can be based on:

• Social
• Cultural
• Political
• Economic

Inequality is unfairness

Inequality can happen to people of a different;

• Gender
• Ethnicity
• Class
• Sexuality
• Religion
