Stylistic Features: I

- Folk music:

  • Aural tradition (learnt/played by ear)
  • Score = transcription of recording

- Use of traditional irish flute (breathier tone, narrow dynamic capability)

- Performed by Niall Keegan:

  • Famous folk flautist from Newcastle
  • Known for mixing folk with jazz and other styles
  • Known for his abilities as a virtuosic player

- Traditional dances with standard time signatures and speed:

  • Jig = fast compound
  • Reel = 4/4 dotted rhythms

- Medley arrangement of 2 folk songs (2nd directly after 1st)

- G major - simple key & natural for traditional flute

  • No awkward or chromatic notes

- Tonic-dominant harmonies from the melody

- Decorated melody

- Modal 'flavour' e.g. F natural bar 4 / 12 /29 indicates Mixolydian mode

- Virtuoso accelerando - showing off / competitive nature of performance
