gateshead: here jane is the odd one out. she has a passioante nature and fiery temperament which she displays sometimes, but most of the time she is reserved, small and frail. she is also physically small and frail. the others feel hostile towards her. she is left out and pushed tot he side so she finds refuge in picture books. although it is a warm house, jane feels emotionally cold.
lowood: here it is physically cold but jane feels emotionally warm. she has finally been accepted and even has a friend- helen burns who tries to teach her to withstand pain and be patient and tolerant. when helen dies, jane finds herself alone again. it seems as though her life is governed by loss: her parents, mr reed then helen.
