  • GIF is a compressed, bitmapped image file type.
  • Can be animated sequences of images or singular still images.
  • Can contain transparent pixels.
  • When GIF files are saved Losless Compression is used.
  • File sizes kept low by restricting the colour depth to 256 colours. This is 8-bit colour, yielding 28 colours.

  • Initially developed for online image sharing.
  • Support transparency
  • Do not support animation.
  • Uses Lossless Compression techniques.

TIFF- Tagged Image File Format

  • OCR software commonly produces TIFF images from scans.
  • Can behave like containers for holding images of other file types.

  • Can use both Lossy and Lossless compression techniques.

  • Developed by Apple.
  • Apple's native graphic file type for interchange of graphics between various Apple programs.
  • An object-oriented file type.
  • Can store both Bitmap and Vector graphics.
  • Can use up to 24-bit colour, yielding 224 or 16,777,216 colours which is known as true colour.
