MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS

MIS: An organised collection of people, procedures and resources designed to support the decisions of managers.

example 1: A headteacher in a school analysing those pupils who are falling behind in their work as evidenced by test results and whose attendance is poor... so that interviews with parents can be made.

example 2: A production manager of a company using MIS to make predictions as to how many of a certain product to make... based on the sales from the same quater the previous year.

FEATURES OF A GOOD MIS

  • accuracy of the data: this is dependant on the inputted data
  • flexibility of data analysis: ability to allow managers to set up their own queries
  • providing data in an appropriate form: presenting information according to the needs of the user (eg. if data of sales then in a graph/ table)
  • accessible to a wide range of users and support a wide range of skills and knowledge: should be easy for managers to use regardless of their ICT skills
  • improve interpersonal communications amongst management and employees
  • allow individual project planning
  • avoid information overload: the data and information is precise and to the point

FEATURES OF A POOR MIS

  • complexity of the system: makes it less efficient as the managers will find it difficult to use
  • inadequate initial analysis: failing to provide the required information
  • lack of management involvement in the initial design
  • inappropriate hardware and software: if the hardware is too slow
  • lack of management knowledge about computer system and their capabilities: managers need to know how to use the system
  • poor communications between professionals: the managers need to communicate with the professionsals who are creating the system so that it is made to fit their needs and they know how to use it
  • lack of professional standards
